Astros decline 2007 option on Bagwell

Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Houston Astros declined to exercise its
option on first baseman Jeff Bagwell for the 2007 campaign, the club announced
Tuesday.
The four-time All-Star is Houston's all-time leader in home runs (449), runs
batted in (1,529) and walks (1,401). In 15 major-league seasons with the
Astros, he hit .297 with 488 doubles, 32 triples while stealing 202 bases and
scoring 1,517 runs in 2,150 games.
Bagwell spent the entire 2006 season on the disabled list with a right
shoulder injury.
"Jeff has had an outstanding career with the Astros," general manager Tim
Purpura said. "We appreciate the way he has played the game, mentored his
teammates, and represents both our ballclub and the city of Houston. Jeff's
legacy with the Astros is truly legendary."
Bagwell is just one of 10 players all-time, and the only first baseman, with
more than 400 home runs and 200 stolen bases. From 1996-2001, he had at least
30 homers, 100 RBI and 100 runs scored.
The 38-year-old Bagwell is one of only nine players in National League history
to win both the NL Rookie of the Year award (1991) and NL Most Valuable Player
award (1994), which is also the same year he received a Rawlings Gold Glove
Award.
