Bears edge Bucs in OT to earn homefield advantage
Football Betting Lines
12/18/2006 -
Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Robbie Gould connected on a 25-yard field goal
with 3:37 remaining in overtime, and the Chicago Bears cut short a stunning
rally by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hanging on for a 34-31 victory at Soldier
Field. With the win, the Bears clinch homefield advantage throughout the
playoffs.
The Bucs (3-11) forced the sudden-death session after signal-caller Tim Rattay
orchestrated an improbable comeback, turning a 24-3 deficit in the third
quarter into a 31-31 tie at the end of regulation. Rattay took over for the
struggling Bruce Gradkowski late in the first half and completed 20-of-35
passes for 268 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
In overtime, the Bucs won the coin toss and elected to receive, starting at
their own 20 after Gould's kickoff sailed through the end zone. Cadillac
Williams carried for four yards on first down, and Rattay hooked up with Alex
Smith for a ten-yard gain before Smith had the ball ripped from his grasp. On
the bottom of a pile of players, Ian Scott recovered for Chicago, and a booth
review was called to determine whether Scott was inbounds, with the original
ruling upheld.
Three plays later, Gould came on for a 37-yard, game-wining field-goal attempt
and hooked the ball wide left, giving the Buccaneers life.
The Bucs, however, couldn't move the chains and elected to punt, with Devin
Hester picking up eight yards on the return for Chicago (12-2). The Bears then
went three-and-out, pushing Tampa Bay back to its own one-yard-line to start
its next march, which also stalled.
Hester took the ensuing punt at his own 46 and avoided an initial hit before
gaining four yards to set Chicago up at mid-field. Cedric Benson picked up two
yards on a rush around the right end on first down, and Rex Grossman's pass
fell incomplete on second down before the quarterback hit Adrian Peterson in
stride for a 29-yard pickup. Peterson got the next two handoffs, picking up 13
yards on the ground, and Gould connected from 25 yards out to give Chicago the
victory.
Grossman finished the game 29-of-44 for 339 yards passing, which are all
career highs. He also became the first Bear's quarterback in 73 games to throw
over 300 yards.
Desmond Clarke had seven catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns for Chicago,
which has won three in a row and five of six. Thomas Jones carried 17 times
for 68 yards and also had one score.
Joey Galloway led the Bucs' receiving corps with three catches for 107 yards
and one touchdown. Tampa Bay has lost four in a row and seven of eight.
Already up 21-3, Chicago carried that momentum into the third quarter, opening
a commanding 24-3 lead with 5:22 remaining. Gould's 38-yard field goal came at
the end of a 10-play, 48-yard drive for the Bears, who took advantage of back-
to-back 15-yard penalties against Tampa Bay during the march.
The Bucs, however, came storming back, scoring two touchdowns just 72 seconds
apart, to spark talk of a potential upset.
First, Mike Alstott took it in from 14 yards out to snap a streak of 15
scoreless quarters by Tampa Bay, cutting the Chicago lead to 24-10.
On the ensuing kickoff, Hester, who returned two kickoffs for TDs last week,
fumbled at his own 15 after an eight-yard return. Wesley Mallard scooped
up the ball and Tampa Bay was in business, starting its drive 28 yards from
the end zone. Three plays later, a nine-yard strike from Rattay to Smith
pulled the Bucs within a score, 24-17, just inside the fourth quarter.
Benson attempted to dash any hopes of a Tampa Bay comeback, capping an
8-play, 77- yard drive with a four-yard burst to give the Bears a 31-17
cushion with 9:23 left in the contest.
A pass over the middle from Rattay to Galloway turned into a 64-yard score,
bringing the Bucs to within 31-24.
The Bears went three-and-out, and on Tampa Bay's next possession, Rattay hit
Ike Hilliard in stride, and the wide receiver rumbled 44 yards for the
touchdown to tie the game, 31-31, with 3:44 left.
Chicago got the ball back but elected to run out the game clock, taking its
chances in the extra session.
Both sides traded punts to start the contest before Chicago marched into Bucs'
territory on their second possession. Jones had five touches on seven plays,
carrying four times for 18 yards and also hauling in a short pass on first
down, and Grossman capped the 62-yard drive by floating a pass to Clark, who
scampered 24 yards to the end zone to give the Bears a 7-0 lead at 7:42 in the
first quarter.
Chicago also caught a break toward the end of the stanza. On first down,
Grossman attempted a lateral to Clark, who rumbled 15 yards before fumbling
the ball. Tampa's Derrick Brooks recovered at the Chicago 44, went nine yards
and then lost the ball before it rolled out of bounds. The Bears then
challenged the call, saying Clark was down on contact, and the ruling was
reversed after a video review.
Tampa Bay finally scratched the scoreboard on its fifth possession, as Matt
Bryant connected on a 45-yard field goal. The kick cut the Bucs' deficit to
7-3 with 8:24 to play in the half before Chicago scored 14 unanswered points.
Jones capped an 8-play, 56-yard drive with a five-yard scoring rush at 4:21,
giving the Bears a 14-3 edge, and Clark's 12-yard touchdown reception made it
21-3 lead heading into the break.

Numerous College Basketball teams take final big step to March Madness betting
So, what turned on the lock spigot? Well, after what felt like weeks of teams treading water and slipping back into the bubble muck, a bunch of them finally decided to say "to heck with parity" and won games that should put them into the Big Dance.
Disagree with some of these? Then here's the challenge. Take all of the "should be ins" and make a legit case that each should be ahead of the team that's a lock. Then find 10 more teams that also should be placed in the bracket ahead of that lock team. Not so easy, is it?
If you want more evidence that these locks should be good to go, check out what our research department dug up. Since the NCAA Tournament went to 64 teams in 1985, only six teams from a "big six" conference have had a record of 10-6 or better in conference play and not been selected: Colorado (2004) and Nebraska (1999) from the Big 12, Boston College and Seton Hall (both 2003) from the Big East, Indiana (2005) from the Big Ten and UCLA, which somehow went 12-6 in the Pac-10 in 1988 and still missed out. (Note: Five teams went 11-7 and didn't get in, the latest being last season's Stanford team, which had a brutal nonconference run.)
Yes, 10 conference wins doesn't always mean what it used to because of unbalanced schedules, but this season, it should be plenty good in all but the extreme cases (see: Iowa).
In a way, this is a welcome development, because this is a bubble watch, not a lock watch. We can finally be done with teams like Maryland and Virginia Tech and start really bearing down on at-large battles such as Syracuse-West Virginia and Appalachian State-Georgia Tech.
Interestingly, all the shifting of teams into lock status appears to be more administrative than impactful. The number of remaining available at-larges didn't change one iota. The only difference is that teams on the bubble now have a clearer idea of which team(s) they are competing with for those precious bids.
As always, I've tried to be as inclusive as possible while only including teams that would have a reasonable chance of at least being discussed if this were Selection Sunday. If your team's not on here, there's probably a good reason (or three) -- start with the RPI and SOS numbers and work your way down.
(Please remember, per selection committee criteria, that records displayed are Division I only. Next update: Feb. 28)
If you have a legitimate grievance, or just like talking bubble, send an e-mail. Polite ones with fact-based arguments have a much better chance of receiving a response. I apologize in advance if I can't get back to all of you.
Atlantic Coast Conference
Work left to do: Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech
The ACC moves to six locks as BC, Va Tech and Virginia all got their 10th ACC wins, which should be more than enough this season, and Maryland rallied past North Carolina to get the final piece the Terps needed. After that? It could end there unless FSU, Ga Tech or Clemson picks things up in a hurry.
Work left to do:
Clemson [19-9 (5-9), RPI: 41, SOS: 42] The Tigers are closer to locking up the collapse of the year award (in a good battle with OK State) than they are to grabbing an at-large. Clemson's been very competitive, but there's no really positive way you can spin nine losses in 11 games. They now cannot get to .500 in ACC play and still must head to Virginia Tech in the season finale (after hosting Miami). Unless the Tigers win both and/or do some serious work in the ACC tourney, they very well could be left out. There are no great nonconference wins, but ODU, App State, Miss. State, South Carolina and Georgia are all respectable W's.
Florida State [18-11 (6-9), RPI: 48, SOS: 14] The Noles got thrashed at Maryland to run their losing streak to five, but then pounded NC State at home to set the table for what likely is an elimination game at Miami. You can at least make a case for the Seminoles at 7-9 in ACC play (and some work in the ACC tourney), but 6-10 is not going to cut it. Wins at Duke and over Florida will resonate, but the computer numbers remain questionable. Beyond Florida, FSU thrashed bubble buddy Providence, but there's not a ton beyond those two games that will help. They didn't show well in big-time opportunities against Pitt and Wisconsin (before the Florida win).
Georgia Tech [18-10 (6-8), RPI: 51, SOS: 46] The Jackets beat Wake on Wednesday but couldn't get it done at UVa on Saturday, which could be a crucial loss with UNC and BC (both at home) remaining and 8-8 almost a certain need for at-large consideration. A nonconference win over Memphis helps, but the RPI and SOS are not at-large quality right now; if you combine those with a sub-.500 ACC mark, that could spell NIT for GT.
