Braves wrap up brief series with struggling Cubs

(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Atlanta Braves shoot for a sweep of the Chicago Cubs
this evening in the finale of a brief two-game series at Turner Field.
Atlanta has won two straight, three of four and sits atop the NL East
standings with a 10-4 mark. The New York Mets, last year's division champs,
are a half-game off the pace.
In Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Cubs in the series opener, Jeff Francoeur
belted a three-run homer and Kelly Johnson added two hits and a pair of RBI,
as the Braves improved to 6-3 at home this season. Scott Thorman also homered
in the win.
Braves starter Kyle Davies did not factor in the decision after he was charged
with four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Oscar Villarreal (1-0)
earned the win despite blowing a save and giving up two runs in one inning of
work.
Taking the ball for Atlanta this evening will be Mark Redman. Redman is still
looking for his first win in a Braves uniform and is 0-2 with a whopping 12.96
ERA. The lefty lost his first start on April 6 against the Mets, then dropped
another decision last Friday to Florida, allowing seven runs on six hits with
two walks and two strikeouts in just 2 2/3 innings of work.
Redman is 2-2 with a 2.70 earned run average in five career starts against the
Cubs.
In front office news for the Braves, the club signed manager Bobby Cox to a
one-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2008
campaign.
Chicago, meanwhile, is off to a slow start this season and has lost two in a
row, including last night's two-run loss to the Braves.
Mark DeRosa homered and drove in a pair of runs and Derrek Lee went 2-for-4
with an RBI and two runs scored for the Cubs, who have dropped three of four.
Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano was roughed up and yielded five runs on eight
hits in six innings. Scott Eyre (0-1) absorbed the loss after giving up three
runs.
The Cubs will send Rich Hill to the hill today and the southpaw is 2-0 with a
solid 0.64 ERA. Hill won his season debut on April 6 against Milwaukee before
defeating Cincinnati on Saturday with seven shutout innings of three-hit ball.
Hill is 1-0 with a 1.59 earned run average in one career start against
Atlanta.
Atlanta has dominated the season series with Chicago over the past two
seasons, winning 13 of 15 against the club. That includes a 6-1 mark for the
Braves last season.

Chicago Bears (+350) - The Bears are probably a bit of an overhyped team once again this year.No, we don't think it is plausible for QB Jay Cutler to have as bad of a season as he did last year, and we do think the additions of RB Chester Taylor and DE Julius Peppers are going to help immensely, but there's still something in the water in the Windy City that we aren't so sure about. There is some real talent amassing on this team offensively, as the combination of QB Matt Stafford, RB Jahvid Best, WR Calvin Johnson, and TE Brandon Pettigrew should put a bunch of points on the board if the offensive line can even remotely hold up. The questions really lie on defense, where it feels like DT Ndamukong Suh is going to be trying to stop opposing teams all by himself. This year should show some marked improvement in the Motor City.
