Santana hopes to rebound as Twins go for sweep of Mariners

(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Johan Santana tries to bounce back from his first loss of
the season this evening when the Minnesota Twins try to complete a three-game
sweep of the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.
After winning his first two starts of the season, Santana was tagged with the
loss in his last start on Friday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, as he
allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings to fall to 2-1 to go along
with a 3.60 earned run average.
Santana also struck out 10, but suffered his first regular season loss at the
Metrodome in 25 starts dating back to August 1, 2005.
The 28-year-old left-hander is 6-1 lifetime against the Mariners with a 3.00
ERA in 14 games, seven of which have been starts.
Seattle will pin its hopes on southpaw Jarrod Washburn, who is 0-1 with a 3.75
ERA in two starts. Washburn absorbed the loss in his last outing on Friday
against Texas, as he yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six
innings.
Washburn has faced the Twins 11 times and is 5-3 with a 3.52 ERA.
In the second game of this set on Wednesday Justin Morneau drove in a pair of
runs and Joe Mauer scored twice for the Twins, who posted a 5-4 win. A victory
today would give them their fourth straight road win, but also their first
sweep in Seattle since taking three in a row from August 9-11, 1996.
Carlos Silva (1-1) was solid over 6 1/3 frames, allowing three runs on eight
hits with four strikeouts. Joe Nathan nearly coughed up the lead in the ninth,
but a strong relay throw with two outs prevented the tying run from scoring,
and gave Nathan his fourth save of the season.
Seattle, though, may have lost more than just the game, as phenom Felix
Hernandez was forced to leave the contest in the first inning with elbow
discomfort. The standout right-hander gave up three runs on two hits over just
one-third of an inning before being lifted in favor of Jake Woods.
Hernandez (2-1) was coming off a one-hitter against Boston his last time out,
and had yielded no runs and just four hits over his first two starts (17
innings) before Wednesday's setback. He will be re-evaluated on Thursday.
Elsewhere on the injury front Minnesota outfielder Torii Hunter missed
Wednesday's game with a bruised left shoulder and will be a game-time decision
tonight.
Minnesota, which swept the Mariners in a three-game set at home last season,
took five of eight meetings between the teams last season and is 18-11 against
Seattle since the beginning of the 2004 campaign. The Twins did lose two of
three games played in Safeco Field in 2006, however.
